You Married Her… That Doesn’t Mean You Get to Stop Pursuing Her
By Eric Buchholz / September 18, 2026 / No Comments / Marriage
There was a time when you paid attention.
You asked questions. You planned dates. You noticed small things. You wanted to know what she was thinking. You made time because being together mattered.
Then you got married.
Life got bigger. Work got heavier. Responsibilities multiplied. Maybe children arrived. Bills showed up. Schedules filled.
And somewhere along the way, pursuit became familiarity.
You still loved her.
You just stopped showing it with the same intentionality.

Winning Her Heart Wasn’t the Finish Line
One of the quietest dangers in marriage is believing that once you’ve won your wife’s heart, you no longer need to pursue it.
That’s not how relationships work.
Marriage didn’t complete the pursuit. It gave it a lifetime.
Your wife isn’t a possession you secured on your wedding day. She’s a person who continues changing.
So are you.
What mattered to her ten years ago may not be what matters most today. Her dreams may have changed. Her fears may have changed. Her priorities may have changed.
You don’t keep discovering your wife by remembering who she used to be.
You keep discovering her by remaining curious about who she’s becoming.

Managing a Life Is Not the Same as Sharing One
A married couple can talk constantly and barely connect.
Who’s picking up the kids? What time is the appointment? Did you pay the bill? What do we need from the store? What’s happening this weekend?
Those conversations are necessary.
They keep the machine running.
But marriage cannot survive on logistics alone.
At some point you have to talk about more than the schedule.
Ask what she’s excited about. Ask what has been weighing on her. Ask what she misses. Ask what she wants the next few years to look like. Ask what she’s afraid to say out loud.
Then listen.
Not because you need to fix everything.
Because being known matters.

Protect Time That Belongs to the Marriage
Relationships rarely grow stronger on leftover time.
That’s a hard truth because modern life is designed to consume every available minute. There’s always another email, another task, another notification, another project, another responsibility.
If you keep waiting until everything else is done before you invest in your marriage, you’ll wait forever.
Protect some time.
It doesn’t need to be extravagant. Take a walk. Sit outside with coffee. Have dinner without phones. Go somewhere together. Spend twenty minutes talking after the house gets quiet.
The price doesn’t matter.
Presence does.

Familiarity Can Kill Appreciation
One of the strengths of marriage is becoming deeply familiar with another person.
One of the dangers is allowing familiarity to replace gratitude.
You stop noticing the things that once impressed you because they’ve become normal. Her faithfulness becomes expected. Her sacrifices become invisible. Her kindness becomes routine.
You start noticing what she missed faster than what she consistently does.
Reverse that pattern.
Say thank you. Tell her what you admire. Notice the effort. Acknowledge the sacrifice. Compliment her without wanting anything from her.
Communicate one simple message:
“I still see you.”
That matters more than most husbands realize.

Choose Her Again
A wedding is one decision.
Marriage is thousands of them.
Every season gives you another chance to choose the woman you married. When life is exciting. When life is boring. When money is tight. When work is brutal. When you’re tired. When the relationship feels effortless.
And when it doesn’t.
Long marriages aren’t built because two people somehow stay permanently frozen in the feelings they had on their wedding day.
They’re built because two people continue honoring what that day meant.
Again and again.

Final Thoughts
Ask yourself something uncomfortable:
Am I still pursuing my wife—or am I simply living beside her?
If you don’t like the answer, don’t turn it into guilt.
Turn it into action.
Plan something. Ask something. Notice something. Say something. Protect time. Make her laugh. Put the phone down.
Show her she still matters.
Long-lasting marriages are built by couples who never stop learning and never stop pursuing each other.
You chose her once.
Choose her again.
